As Trainer Bill indicated, intensity is a function the pecentage of maximal output that we can “push” a muscle/muscle unit or groups of muscles/muscle units. OVERTRAINING, however, is a function of “overshooting” our recovery abilities. So: INTENSITY: The maximal effort we can put into performing an activity (for most of us, lifting weights).

intensity is "how hard you do it" in terms of relative effort. This gets fairly nebulous sometimes. As kiknskreem said, you will get different definitions with different contexts. For example, in bodybuilding, "intensity" is often described as how many reps you do towards your ultimate ability with a given load.

Intensity is a scale, not a switch – and there doesn’t appear to be a huge difference between leaving a rep or two in the tank and going to failure. (Plus the beneficial effects of submaximal training accumulate after repeated efforts). Doing a set that you’d rate an 8 or 9 on the perceived exertion scale is a tough workout!

High intensity bodybuilding is more to do with the load you lift, rather than how many times you lift it. There’s a greater emphasis on mechanical stress with high intensity training. It’s all about aggressive, heavy lifting with a grip and rip mentality. Every lift is about going as heavy as you can for the chosen rep range.

High-Intensity Training teaches the bodybuilder to correctly perform a movement so it has a direct effect on muscle growth. HIT focuses on the isometric and the negative portions of the workout by activating slow and fast twitch muscle fibers that would not be activated by other types of movement.

High-intensity functional bodybuilding (HIFB) is a hybrid training protocol, which combines traditional bodybuilding, high-intensity functional movements, and interval training to optimize body composition and maximize performance. Personally, conventional bodybuilding splits and steady-state cardio can become monotonous and boring.

The basic premise of HIT is that it’s exercise intensity and not volume that triggers increases in strength and muscle size. Once maximal exertion levels have been reached, any additional exercise above and beyond this point merely erodes away at valuable recovery resources and delays progress.

Exercises are performed with a high level of effort, or intensity, where it is thought that it will stimulate the body to produce an increase in muscular strength and size. Advocates of HIT believe that this method is superior for strength and size building than most other methods which, for example, may stress lower weights with larger volume (reps).

For most strength sports, intensity is the parameter that determines much of the training effect. If your goal is to develop absolute strength, then that will require certain levels of intensity, just as if your goal is to develop hypertrophy, it wouldn’t make sense to train with very light weights or the newest late-night infomercial gadget.
